Entering the Measurements in Garment Designer

There are several approaches to entering custom measurements in Garment Designer. These are:

  1. You may start with a Standard Size, and edit certain measurements to customize that size more to your body.

  2. You may build a Simple sloper, entering only the 12 required measurements for the sloper.

  3. You may build a Refined Sloper by entering the full realm of measurements.

  4. You may build a Refined Sloper, entering measurements in such a way that some use the front vs. back and left vs. right measurements while others simply use the average or total. Garment Designer will allow this approach, and leaves it up to the user to determine what works best with them.

Customizing a Standard Size Sloper

The simplest approach to building a custom sloper is to start with a Standard Size sloper, and edit certain measurements to customize that size more to your body.

To do this:

  1. Choose the standard size closest to your personal measurements.

  2. Go to the Sloper menu and choose either the Sloper/Edit menu (if you want to work with a Simple Sloper) or the Sloper/Edit Refined Fit menu (if you want to work with Refined Fit).

  3. Type in the name of your new Sloper at the top of the dialog window.

  4. Edit measurements as necessary to achieve your fit and add measurements, as you wish, if you are working with the Refined Fit sloper.

  5. Click OK to approve all the measurements and close the window.

  6. Save the Sloper by selecting the Save function from the Sloper menu.

Building a Simple Sloper

Use this approach when you want a Simple Fit sloper, and are willing to take the time to take all your own measurements.

To do this:

  1. Go to the Sloper menu and choose the New function. A dialog window opens.

  2. Type in the name of your new Sloper at the top of the dialog window.

  3. Work your way one by one through the various measurements and enter your personal measurements in the appropriate places.

  4. Click OK to approve all the measurements and close the window.

  5. Save the Sloper by selecting the Save function from the Sloper menu.

Building a Refined Sloper (Complete)

Use this approach when you want a Refined Fit sloper, and are willing to take the time to take all your own measurements. This method will provide you with the best fit, but requires additional time and effort in measuring, inputting the measurements and patternmaking.

To do this:

  1. Go to the Sloper menu and choose the New Refined Fit function.

Building a Refined Sloper (Partial)

Use this approach when you want a Refined Fit sloper, and are willing to take the time to take and input additional measurements to improve the fit, but not necessarily all the measurements. Since Garment Designer will allow you omit certain measurements (and it therefore averages or adds for you), you can bypass some of the customizing. This method will provide you with a better fit, and dependent upon which measurements you allow to be averaged, etc., patternmaking may be somewhat simpler.

To do this:

  1. Go to the Sloper menu and choose the New Refined Fit function. A dialog window opens.

  2. Type in the name of your new Sloper at the top of the window.

  3. Work your way one by one through the various measurements and enter your personal measurements in the appropriate places. You must make sure that you have measurements in all the Total and Average fields in the measurements on the left side of the dialog (i.e. those that allow you to enter left/right and front/back measurements).

  4. Click OK to approve all the measurements and close the window.

  5. Save the Sloper by selecting the Save function from the Sloper menu.
